Tawang : In a significant initiative to promote scientific vegetable cultivation and strengthen food and nutritional security, the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Tawang, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (ICAR-IIVR), Varanasi, successfully conducted Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) on High-Yielding Vegetable Varieties along with an Input Distribution Programme across seven villages of Tawang district.

The programmes were organised at Khimney (13th July), Changprong (14th July), Kyidphel (15th July), Themghar (16th July), Woongla (20th July), Sazo (21st July), and Shakti (22nd

July), witnessing enthusiastic participation from local farmers.

During the technical sessions, C.K. Singh, Subject Matter Specialist (Agronomy), KVK Tawang, sensitised farmers on soil health management, the importance of natural farming, incorporation of leguminous crops in cropping systems to sustain soil fertility, and scientific vermicomposting techniques for enhancing long-term soil productivity.

Lakshmipriya Borah, Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection), delivered practical sessions on Integrated Pest Management (IPM), highlighting eco-friendly methods of controlling pests and diseases for sustainable agriculture. She also demonstrated seed treatment using the biofungicide Trichoderma viride to protect crops from seed-borne diseases and improve crop productivity.

The programme was coordinated by Dr. Abhimanyu Chaturvedi, Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture) and Nodal Officer, who guided farmers on scientific cultivation practices of garden pea, carrot, long bean, faba bean, cole crops, and other vegetables. He encouraged farmers to adopt improved high-yielding varieties to enhance productivity, increase farm income, and strengthen household food security.

To facilitate immediate adoption of the demonstrated technologies, farmers were provided with improved seeds of garden pea, long bean, faba bean, carrot, cauliflower, water spinach, rajma, along with essential agricultural inputs such as vermi beds, spades, and biopesticides, supplied under the support of ICAR-IIVR, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

The initiative reflects KVK Tawang's continued commitment to transferring advanced agricultural technologies to the grassroots, empowering farmers with scientific knowledge, and promoting sustainable, climate-resilient farming practices across the district. (DIPRO)
